International Top Five: Alice Replicates Incredible Holds Worldwide

March 17, 2010

Despite no major market openings this past weekend, Alice in Wonderland slipped just 15% during its second weekend of release as it easily topped the international charts yet again. Over the past weekend it managed $80.59 million on 7065 screens in 45 markets for a total of $225.05 million internationally and $434.39 million worldwide. It did open in first place in Belgium, with $1.44 million on 112 screens over the weekend and $1.65 million in total. Its biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it added $11.07 million on 533 screens over the weekend for a total of $34.29 million after two. In Germany, the film actually grew a tiny bit to $7.15 million on 555 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.53 million. In South Korea it was down just 2% to $4.57 million on 444 screens, giving the film $11.28 million in total. With debuts in France, Spain, Japan, and Brazil over the next month and a half, the film will have no trouble adding to its totals. It could more than double its current worldwide box office.

Shutter Island rose a spot to second with $19.52 million on 4135 screens in 43 markets for a total of $85.49 million. Most of its growth was thanks to its opening in the U.K., where it placed second with $3.39 million on 416 screens. In France it added $3.03 million on 542 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.47 million after three.

Avatar moved in the other direction, falling from second to third with $17.31 million on 4106 screens in 69 markets. After three months of release, the film has made $1.91 billion internationally and $2.64 billion worldwide. The film is still on pace to reach $2 billion internationally, while it topped $100 million in Australia over the weekend. It is also less than $1 million from that milestone in Spain, but it appears that will be the last individual market in which Avatar will hit the century mark, as it has fallen off that pace in Italy.

Green Zone opened in fourth place with $9.56 million on 1608 screens in 14 markets during its first weekend of international release. The film's biggest opening came in the U.K. where it made $3.15 million on 419 screens, only enough for third place. On the other hand, the film placed second in Australia with $1.81 million on 235 screens and first in Spain with $1.56 million on 310 screens.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief's Italian debut helped it remain in the top five with $7.14 million on 4703 screens in 59 markets over the weekend for a total of $121.59 million after a month of release. In Italy it earned $1.62 million on 288 screens, which was enough for third place. Meanwhile, in Japan it added $1.16 million on 562 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.43 million after three.
