SpongeBob SquarePants has been on the air for more than ten years, and to celebrate, they're releasing a DVD. They're releasing a SpongeBob SquarePants DVD to celebrate? It would be more amazing if they went a week without releasing a DVD. Okay, that's a little unfair, but in the past 8 years, they've released more than 40 DVDs, which even hardcore fans must admit is a little out of hand. This week 10 Happiest Moments comes out in most retailers, after being a Wal-Mart exclusive for the past year. But is it worth picking up?
As you could probably tell by the name, this DVD has ten shorts, starting with...
The only extra on the DVD is the pilot episode, Help Wanted.
On the one hand, practically every single episode of SpongeBob SquarePants: 10 Happiest Moments is a solid hit. I don't watch the show outside of the times I review it, and even I was able to recognize some of these episodes by name alone, that's how memorable they are. On the other hand, they've all been released on DVD before, at least three times (themed DVD releases, season sets, and the Megaset). The price-per-minute is excellent, but the double-dipping, triple-dipping, and in some cases quadruple-dipping is too much. If you really like the show, grab the Megaset and forget about the single-disc releases.
The Show
The episode that introduced Sandy Cheeks and she invites him to her home. However, since squirrels live on land, she lives in an air filled dome, And since SpongeBob lives in water... you can see where this is going.
Another introductory story, this time introducing the comic book characters SpongeBob and Patrick idolized. Visiting the two actors in the retirement home proves too much excitement for the permanently confused Mermaidman, so Barnacleboy convinces him SpongeBob and Patrick are bad guys in hopes of chasing them off.
Squidward sets up a talent show at the Krusty Krab and he's the star of the show. It proves to be a hard crowd to please. ... At least he's having trouble getting them to cheer. Whenever SpongeBob goes on stage to sweep, the crowd leaps to its feet and cheers. Needless to say, this infuriated Squidward.
Not much of a plot here, just Sandy and SpongeBob trying to prove which one is the better karate expert by sneaking up on each other. Of course, this causes them both to be very, very paranoid.
This episode starts with Plankton in what appear to be a gimp mask. ... I'm confused and disoriented. After yet another failure to steal the Krabby Patty formula, he uses his new invention to switch lives with Mr. Krabs for a taste of success. However, he soon learns that having to deal with SpongeBob and the others isn't worth it.
SpongeBob learns that Squidward has never had a Krabby Patty and he becomes obsessed with making him try one. After a short "Green Eggs and Ham" moment, Squidward finally tries one, and instantly becomes addicted. However, he has to keep his addiction a secret from SpongeBob, lest SpongeBob torment him over his refusal to try them in the first place.
In an attempt to make even more money, Mr. Krabs decides to keep the Krusty Krab open 24 hours a day. During the first midnight shift, Squidward tells SpongeBob a ghost story.
Sandy and SpongeBob go to the beach, allegedly to go swimming, but instead it's a trap. SpongeBob is going to use this opportunity to surprise Sandy with his Karate expertise. Unfortunately for him, she had the same idea. While fighting, they discover the Salty Spitoon, the roughest bar under the sea. Sandy gets in with ease, but it's a lot harder for SpongeBob to prove he's not a weenie.
Glove World is opening a new roller coaster, The Fiery Fist O'Pain, and Patrick and SpongeBob want to be the first on it. However, after a nightmare, SpongeBob is too scared to go on it.
The SpongeBob Christmas Special. Normally, there are two stories per episode, but this special is one story that is two episodes long. After an introduction from Patchy, the special begins with Sandy teaching SpongeBob about Christmas and Santa Claus. Excited by the prospects of gifts and good cheer, SpongeBob tells all the other residents of Bikini Bottom about Santa and they are all very excited as well. All except Squidward, who refuses to believe in Santa. So that night when Santa doesn't show up, the town gets very angry at SpongeBob, while Squidward gloats. However, after seeing how devastated SpongeBob is, Squidward decides to dress up as Santa to cheer him up. Has Squidward gone soft? The Extras
