It could be the beginning of Awards Season this weekend, as Never Let Me Go opened on Wednesday and Jack Goes Boating opens tonight. I'm not so sure either film will be an Awards Season player, but they both certainly have the feel of one.

Picture Me: A Model's Diary - Reviews
A confusing movie that might be a documentary about the perils of starting a relationship online. Or it might be a mockumentary. I'm leaning toward the latter. Regardless, the controversy could be the best thing going for the film and if enough people are talking about it, it could become a big hit. Catfish opens tonight in a dozen theaters, mostly in New York City and the Los Angeles area.
This documentary Premiered on TV previously and comes out on DVD in just a couple weeks. Additionally, it has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Finally, it opens tonight at the Gold Town Nickelodeon in Juneau, Alaska. I see no reason to suspect it will be a box office hit.
Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of the most reliable actors around, so to see him make his directorial debut is intriguing. On the one hand, having him in the movie is practically a short cut to Oscar buzz at this point. On the other hand, the film's reviews are only good and not great. They are not strong enough to suggest it will thrive in limited release, while they are certainly not strong enough to suggest it will be an Awards Season player. That said, the strong cast could help it thrive. Jack Goes Boating opens tonight in four theaters, two in New York City and two in the Los Angeles area.
Edward Norton plays Bill Kincaid and Brady Kincaid, twins that live opposite lives. The more upstanding Bill is lured back to his small hometown by his drug-dealing brother, Brady, who has a scheme to take down a rival. Apparently, this has been a dream project for Edward Norton for a long time; however, given the reviews, something didn't quite work out. The critics say the performances are good, but the shift from comedy to black is a little too jarring. Leaves of Grass opens tonight in two theaters, including the City Cinemas Village East in New York City.
This should be the big hit on this week's list for a number of factors. It is based on an acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, who previously wrote The Remains of the Day. It stars many rising young stars (Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield, among others). It also already opened on Wednesday and earned nearly $25,000 in just four theaters. This bodes well for its opening weekend. However, its reviews are merely good, not great, so I don't know how well it will be able to expand over the coming weeks. Never Let Me Go opened on Wednesday in four theaters, two in New York City and two in the Los Angeles area.
A documentary about the world of models. There are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and most are negative. There's a tiny, tiny rags to riches appeal to watching the subject, Sara Ziff, rise to fame. But mostly, you will learn little about the world of models from this movie. Picture Me opens tonight at the Angelika Film Center in New York City.
