The latest Ni Hao, Kai-Lan DVD, Princess Kai-Lan, comes out tomorrow, and the DVD just arrived. As in it arrived Monday evening. Normally when this happens, I push the review off till the next week. However, since I already broke my record for reviews in a single week, I thought, why not? Why not add one more.
The usual Ni Hao, Kai-Lan DVD release has four episodes, plus perhaps a minor bonus feature. This time around there are only three episodes, but the first is double-length.
There is a minute-long music video for "Walking on Sunshine". Yes, the Katrina and the Waves song from the 1980s.
Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: Princess Kai-Lan is exactly what you've come to expect from the Ni Hao, Kai-Lan series of DVDs. There's the equvialent of four episodes, plus a short song as an extra, for $13, which is an acceptable price for this type of release. I don't know if anyone learns Mandarin by watching this show, but I'm sure there are many preschool kids that are entertained enough to play along.
The Show
While playing with some butterflies, Kai-Lan, Rintoo, Tolee, and Hoho are visited by a flying squirrel. Or so they think. This flying squirrel is actually the Monkey King in disguise, and he needs Kai-Lan and the others' help. They need to go to the land of the Foxes and the Bears to help the two kingdoms learn to be friends. It going to be tough, because not only do the Bears and the Foxes refuse to talk to each other, they refuse to talk to Kai-Lan and her friends as well. But when the Monkey King accidentally puts a hole in the wall separating these two kingdoms, a bear cub and a fox pup meet. Can Kai-Lan help these two become friends, and will that friendship spread to the adults.
Lulu, the floating Rhino, sent invitations to Kai-Lan and her friends to go up to her house in the clouds. They get to fly on a dragon to get there, and play on the bouncy clouds. But not everyone has fun, as Hoho has trouble adjusting to all the new things. Can Kai-Lan help Hoho feel more comfortable?
Kai-Lan and Hoho are getting ready to celebrate the Moon Festival where they eat dumplings and moon cakes and walk in a lantern parade and finally make a wish on the Moon. But before they can celebrate, they have to help make moon cakes. Then it's time for the celebration, when it comes to wishing on the Moon, they can't because it's cloudy.
