Awards Season: Did DGA Crown Speech King?

January 30, 2011

The Directors Guild of America awards are some of the best indicators for the Oscars with a 90% success rate for predicting Best Director. This is great news for the winner of the feature film category, but it also bodes well for their documentary category.

Notes and Reactions...

  • Tom Hooper winning for The King's Speech might be considered a minor upset over David Fincher and The Social Network. However, I don't think any director was that much of a favorite over any other.
  • On the other hand, going forward, Tom Hooper has to be seen as the favorite to win on Oscar night.
  • Likewise, Inside Job is now the overwhelming favorite for Best Feature-Length Documentary on Oscar night. Restrepo is likely the second favorite to win, but that would be one of the biggest shocks of the night.
