DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 12th, 2011

The quality of first-run releases coming out on Tuesday is pretty low, but on this week's list we have The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which came out last Friday, and The Deathly Hallows: Part I, which comes out this Friday. Besides those two releases, the only other potential big seller is The Incredibles on Blu-ray. I don't think that will top the sales, but it should do well on the Blu-ray sales chart and it is this week's Pick of the Week.

This could be a huge week on Blu-ray with The Incredibles, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Deathly Hallows: Part I all coming out. Of course, only The Incredibles is coming out on Tuesday, so that will mess with the numbers.
Was Car 54 really that popular a TV show? Right now Amazon.com has the first season as the sixth best selling release of the week, and three of the releases above it are for the same movie. That has to be a quirk in the ranking algorithm.
This is a re-release and it is in the top ten according to Amazon.com. Granted, the sequel is coming out relatively soon so the early ads for that is helping sales here, but that's still a sign of a really slow week. That said, if you don't own it, it is worth picking up.
This release was mentioned last week, but the screener hadn't arrived yet. However, our review was online just before its release on Friday. Was it worth waiting a few extra days?
This film earned some Awards Season buzz well in advance of its release; it was certainly coming out at the right time of year. However, it's reviews were terrible and I'm surprised it was able to escape limited release. Extras on the DVD are pretty weak (deleted scenes, original ending, some musical performances) while the Blu-ray has some exclusive featurettes and is BD-Live enabled. The Blu-ray is the way to go if you are interested, but unless you are a hardcore fan of some of the cast or the genre of music, it's not even worth a rental.
This two-disc set has three TV movies plus the reunion special. If you liked the show, it's not a bad deal.
Two stories that both deal with the Kinda and therefore if you are interested in one of them, you'll probably want both, even though most will probably agree the sequel is not quite as good as its predecessor. It's nice that they are being released on the same week. If you've never seen either story, they are not considered classics, but they are better than average for the show's run, and
I've reviewed this no-nonsense police procedural show in the past and I hoped to get the screener for this season as well. However, it is currently late and possibly not going to arrive at all.

This film earned weaker reviews than the franchise average, but I would argue that's because of the cliffhanger ending. It's not a real movie, but the first part of a three-hour movie, and that's bound to annoy some people. That said, for fans of the franchise, it's a must own and the Blu-ray is a contender for Pick of the Week. Also coming out this week are franchise box sets on DVD and Blu-ray, but since there is one more installment in the series, those are ridiculous to buy.
I don't think there's ever been a studio with a record as consistent as Pixar's. In the 15 years they've been making movies, they've never released a film that failed to impress movie critics and moviegoers alike. However, while this movie was Oscar-worthy, does the Blu-ray do it justice? Check out our review for my opinion.
A battle of Good vs. Evil where the weapon used is dance. It was written and directed by Jon Chu, who previous made the last two installments of Step Up, which may or may not be a selling point. Will it appeal to fans of dance movies? Will it have a more general appeal? Read our review to find out.
If you want to watch a good wilderness survival show, stick with Survivorman. This show is only good for internet memes.
A SyFy channel original movie about a killer plant. SyFy channel doesn't have a great track record, but occasionally they produce a winner. Is this one of those times? Read our review for my opinion.
An award-winning documentary that I was hoping would pick up an Oscar nomination. It did earn 100% positive reviews and with more than 30 minutes of additional footage, it is absolutely worth picking up. I'm not entirely sold that you need to go High Definition for this film, but the additional cost is only 33% more, so it's not a bad deal.
More adventures with Max and Ruby, two young bunny siblings that apparently have no parents. Seriously. I've reviewed three DVDs and I've never seen their parents. So sould I be contacting the Child Protection Service over this? That would probably be an overreaction, considering its a cartoon. But while I mull over the subject, check out our review.

I'm looking forward to reviewing this film, but I've been having trouble downloading a screener from the press site. (My internet access has been spotty. It's not a problem when doing my regular work, as it hangs for a few second and then goes back to normal. But downloading a large file is nearly impossible.) Hopefully it's not too late to grab a screener.
Despite having an impressive cast that includes Colin Firth and Catherine Keener, this film sat on a studio shelf for three years before coming out direct-to-DVD. That's a bad sign, but is it a bad movie? Won't know till the screener arrives.
People used to joke that it was more accurate to call the History Channel the Hitler Channel instead. Obviously World War II was one of the most important events of the 20th century, but how many specials can they make before they are just repeating themselves?
This seven-film collection has amazing movies and better extras than most catalog titles have; however, they are also double-dips, so it might be cheaper to buy them separately than to pick up the box set.
I reviewed this stand-up comic's work as part of the Douchbags & Donuts DVD, but this is her first solo release. Is it worth checking out? Won't know till the screener arrives.
