Nickelodeon Box Sets - Buy from Amazon: Dora's Big Party Pack and Yo Gabba Gabba!: Party in a Box

This week Nickelodeon is releasing two box sets featuring two of their more popular TV shows, Dora the Explorer and Yo Gabba Gabba!. In both cases, the box sets are re-releases of three DVDs, and in both cases I've previously reviewed two of them. So what's new to me and are the box sets worth picking up?

Dora's Big Party Pack

This box set contains: Dora's Big Birthday Adventure: Review
Super Silly Fiesta!: Review
It's a Party

The four episodes on this DVD include...

  1. Daisy, La Quinceanera
Dora's cousin, Daisy, is turning 15, which means she's having her Quinceanera party. Dora and Boots are getting ready by practicing the Mambo dance. They have to get to Daisy's party fast, because they have to bring Daisy's crown and shoes. However, they are not five feet into their journey when Swiper shows up, and this time he's using a disguise. He's getting smarter.
  2. The Big Pinata
Dora and Boots are going to the carnival and when they are there, they learn they could win The Big Pinata. But to get the big prize, they have to win ten yellow tickets by playing all of the games along the way.
  3. Surprise!
It's Boots's birthday and Dora is throwing a party for him with cake and balloons and games and presents. But while trying to get to the party they will have to deal with runaway chickens, troll bridges, and of course, Swiper the Fox.
  4. The Fix-It Machine
There's a hole... in Boots's boot. His entire identity is threatened. But Dora tells him not to worry, because there's a machine that can fix it. The machine's going to be busy, because everyone they meet along the way has something in need of repair.

The Extras

There is also a game, a parenting tip, and a music video on this DVD.

Yo Gabba Gabba!: Party in a Box

This box set contains: Birthday Boogie: Review
Clubhouse: Review
The Dancey Dance Bunch

  1. Friends
DJ Lance and the gang of Gabbaland learn about friendship and what friends do. (Sharing food appears to be a big theme, at least according to the one song.) Also, Mya shows up to teach us a dance.
  2. Eat
It's lunchtime in Gabbaland and there's a party in Brobee's tummy and everyone but the veggies are invited. The episode teaches kids to eat their veggies, try new things, while Elijah Wood shows up to teach us a new dance.
  3. Dance
Finally an episode about dancing. Every episode has a lot of dancing, and I'm not even sure this one has more than the others on this DVD. There is plenty of dancing, including a guest appearance by Héctor Jiménez, who's here to teach everyone a new dance.
  4. Happy
We learn about what makes people happy, like riding giant worms. ... That only makes a little more sense in context. (Muno is babysitting a couple worms and Brobee and Toodee are scared of them at first, but when they get over their fears, they are happy. Then the father worm gives them a ride. Like I said, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.) The cool trick this episode is someone playing a Theremin. Best instrument ever.

The Extras

The only extra is a preview of the show.

The Verdict

While both Dora's Big Party Pack and Buy from Amazon are just double-dips, each box set is barely more than the single DVDs sell for, so if you are missing more than one in either set, then they are a great value. On the other hand, if there's only one you are missing, it's likely a better deal to grab just that single DVD. Perhaps the discount on the box set will be deep enough to make a difference. Or perhaps spending a few dollars for a spare DVD is worth it.
