It's a new year and SpongeBob SquarePants fans can celebrate with yet another DVD release, Frozen Face-Off. So what episodes are found on this DVD? And are there enough extras to make it worth picking up?

The Show

  1. Frozen Face-Off
A wealthy citizen of Bikini Bottom has offered a $1 million prize for this year's sleigh race and everyone has entered. It isn't long before everyone of the main characters, but SpongeBob (and Plankton / Karen, but that's another case), have been knocked out of the race. After SpongeBob rescues all of his friends, they end up trapped by the Abominable Snow Mollusk. Fortunately, Mr. Krabs has dealt with her before.
The DVD starts with a double-length short and fortunately it doesn't feel like it is stretched thin. I also like the stop-motion Abominable Snow Mollusk, as well as the Plankton story.
  2. Accidents Will Happen
Squidward gets hurt in an accident at the Krusty Krab and threatens to tell the OWS about the workplace accident, which would cost Mr. Krabs a substantial fine. Mr. Krabs will do anything to prevent that and Squidward takes full advantage of that. Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs gets SpongeBob to investigate the accident, with Patrick's help, of course.
You know how this will end right away, but it's a fun ride with Squidward taking advantage of Mr. Krabs.
  3. The Other Patty
A new restaurant opens near the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket: The Flabby Patty. It's even better than the Krabby Patty. Now Plankton and Mr. Krabs are in a race to see who can steal this new recipe first.
It's a good twist on a common plot. Plenty of gags and even a fun surprise ending.
  4. Drive Thru
After Mr. Krabs breaks a hole in the side of the Krusty Krab, he converts it into a drive thru. It's a huge hit with customers, but it's too big a hit and they can't keep up with the demand.
Mr. Krabs quest for money backfiring is not an uncommon plot, but there's enough that's new that the short works. Also, I liked Plankton's idea of selling Chum Nuggets to people waiting in the line.
  5. The Hot Shot
There is new student at the boating school, Tony Fast, Jr., the son of the famous racing boat driver. The youngster is an amazing driver and Ms. Puff hopes she can use him to teach SpongeBob. It works so well that Tony Junior offers to teach SpongeBob more at home. He even lets SpongeBob drive one of his dad's fancy race cars.
This short has more action than most and it's truly bizarre seeing SpongeBob drive well. However, it doesn't have a good ending.
  6. A Friendly Game
SpongeBob and Patrick are planning on going golfing, but when they are rained out, they decide to play indoor mini-golf in SpongeBob's house. The friendly game turns competitive, which then migrates to Squidward's house.
There are several good jokes in this short, plus it has a healthy dose of crazy.
  7. Sentimental Sponge
It's Spring Cleaning day, but Patrick is upset that SpongeBob isn't sentimental enough. That's all it takes to turn SpongeBob into a hoarder.
Speaking of crazy. This short is full of crazy.

The Extras

There are four bonus shorts, two from Fanboy & Chum Chum and two from T.U.F.F. Puppy. I'm not a fan of either show.

The Verdict

SpongeBob SquarePants: Frozen Face-Off has seven shorts, including one that is double-length. None are real misses, while there are several very good episodes. However, the only extras are episodes from two unrelated shows, so it will likely be a better deal to wait for the full season set.
