Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

We’re still at the point where new releases are graded on the pandemic curve, but even so Morbius is heading for an opening weekend just on the low side of decent, with Sony projecting this morning that it will make $39.1 million on debut. That’s notably lower than Uncharted’s $44-million opening in February, and breaks a streak of great openings for Sony’s standalone Marvel movies, in particular Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which made $90 million in October last year, when even Disney’s Marvel movies were landing in the $70-million to $80-million range. The Batman

The Batman is enjoying a strong second weekend, with Warner Bros. projecting it will fall just 51% from its opening frame, which translates into a decline of only 41% from last Friday, Saturday and Sunday combined. That’s a strong hold for a film that opened as big as it did, and that’s not the only good news at the box office this weekend, with the live event film BTS Permission to Dance on Stage Seoul, and Bollywood hit Radhe Shyam both posting strong earnings, and the seven other films in the top 10 all falling by less than 25% from last weekend. Weekend estimates: The Batman storms to $128.5-million projected domestic opening

March 6th, 2022

The Batman

The Batman will earn about $130 million at the domestic box office this weekend, according to Warner Bros.’s Sunday morning projection. That would be a great result for a franchise reboot at any time, and it’s downright spectacular by current standards. It’s only the second film to open with more than $100 million since the beginning of 2020 (Spider-Man: No Way Home being the first, of course), and it’s performance narrowly exceeds the $123 million our model would have predicted for the film pre-pandemic. The Batman posted an impressive $21.6 million from preview screenings, according to Warner Bros.’ Friday-morning analysis, putting it on track for well over $100 million this weekend and easily the biggest opening since Spider-Man: No Way Home.
