THE MOTH DIARIES is the chilling story of Rebecca, a young girl who, haunted by her father’s suicide, enrolls in an elite boarding school for girls. Before long, Rebecca's  friendship with the popular Lucy is shattered by the arrival of a dark and mysterious new student named Ernessa. Lucy  falls under Ernessa’s spell and becomes emotionally and physically consumed by her glamorous new friend. Rebecca, whose overtures of concern are rejected by Lucy, finds herself lost and confused. She begins to develop a crush on her handsome English teacher, Mr. Davies and immerses herself in the Gothic vampire novel Carilla for his class. Rebecca starts to suspect that Ernessa is a vampire, but, despite the suspicious deaths that begin to occur, her fears are treated as simple girlish jealousy. As the bodies of young girls pile up and the line between reality and the supernatural starts to blur,  Rebecca decides to take matters into her own hands and get rid of Ernessa. Who can say what is real and what is unreal to the heart consumed by passion and a mind afire with loss?

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 28th, 2012

August 28th, 2012

We are clearly in TV on DVD season on the home market as there are five TV on DVD releases among the top six selling releases, with Battleship being the only first run release to break up the TV on DVD dominance. There are many such releases that are contenders for Pick of the Week: Boardwalk Empire: Season Two on Blu-ray, Homeland: Season One on Blu-ray, Once Upon a Time: Season One on Blu-ray, and The Walking Dead: Season Two on Blu-ray. However, in the end I went with The Pirates! Band of Misfits on 3D Combo Pack as the Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, Monsieur Lazhar on DVD or Blu-ray earns a rarely awarded Puck of the Week. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Moth Diaries

August 27th, 2012

The Moth Diaries is the second Canadian film in a row I've reviewed, although technically it is a Canadian / Irish co-production. It is also the second film in a row I've reviewed starring Scott Speedman. It is also the first of two Vampire movies I'll be reviewing in a row. This film failed to make an impact at the box office, but it was the wrong genre for limited release. Will it find a receptive audience on the home market? More...

Limited Releases Won't Be Left in the Cold

April 20th, 2012

There are only a few limited releases on this week's list, and only one of them is earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Marley's reviews are fantastic, but it is opening in 45 theaters, which is a lot for a limited release. It could prove to be too many. To the Arctic 3D is also opening in dozens of theaters, but its reviews are barely above the overall positive level. More...
