When small-time mob leader Zhou Zenong accidentally kills a cop, a dead-or-alive bounty is placed on his head, forcing him on the lam from both the police as well as dangerous gangsters out for the reward. VOD Releases: There’s a Large Gap Between Quality and Quantity

July 8th, 2020

Sometimes Always Never

There are a ton of new releases on VOD this week. Unfortunately, most are rather weak and almost none are going to find a significant audience. The War of the Worlds is the best release, but the Criterion Collection Blu-ray is the better deal. On the other hand, Sometimes Always Never is perfect for VOD, but you have to wait until Friday to get it. More...

New on Disc: Trolls Tower Above the Competition

July 7th, 2020

The War of the Worlds

Trolls World Tour is coming out on physical media this week, on all four major formats: DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, and 4K Ultra HD. However, while it is easily the biggest release of the week, it isn’t the best. There are two contenders for Pick of the Week, Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 and The War of the Worlds: Criterion Collection. The War of the Worlds is the Pick of the Week, but Murdoch Mysteries does get the rarely-awarded Puck of the Week, for Best Canadian Release. More...

Theater Averages: First Cow Comes Home

March 12th, 2020

First Cow

First Cow was one of two films in the $10,000 club earning an average of $20,331 in four theaters. The Booksellers was the only other member of the $10,000 club opening with $15,794 in its lone theater. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Bitter Pill to Swallow

March 6th, 2020

Swallow

There are way too many limited releases and I fear this will hurt the box office chances of any film coming out this week. This is too bad, as there are several that deserve to find an audience, including Bacurau, Extra Ordinary, First Cow, Go Back to China, and so many more. It’s going to be tough when none of the films open in the $10,000 club. More...

International Box Office: Frozen II Finally Faces Some Competition

December 12th, 2019

Frozen II

Frozen II again won the race on top of the international box office chart, but it at least faced some competition this week. The film added $90.2 million in 48 markets for totals of $582.1 million internationally and $919.7 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, but it did earn $800,000 in South Africa, making it the second fastest opening for an animated film in that market, behind only Minions. In other news, the film cracked $100 million in China over the weekend and now sits at $107.06 million in that market, including $9.84 million this past weekend. It took less than three weeks to top the lifetime total of the first Frozen in that market. More...
