Synopsis
Nelly Arcan shocked the literary world with elegant phrasing and lurid details of sex work in her semi-autobiographical first novel, Putain, which became an international best-seller in 2001. A prostitute by choice, Nelly’s fragmented life is laid bare in a stylish mix of make-believe and memoir, revealing a woman lost between irreconcilable identities: the neurotic writer, the vulnerable lover, the call girl and the star. Despite literary success, the French Canadian’s remarkable life ended in tragedy.

Kusama: Infinity led the way on the theater average chart with an impressive $15,499 in two theaters. This isn’t enough to think it will earn a real measure of mainstream success, but it is the latest success story in a year of documentary hits. The Nun was in second place with an average of $13,882. The Hows of Us had arguably the most impressive limited opening of the weekend, as it earned an average of $12,895, while playing in 38 theaters.

We are in an awkward time for limited releases, as summer is over, but it is still too early for Awards Season buzz. This explains why there are so few releases on this week’s list and why none of them will likely be hits. That said, there are two of them, I am Not a Witch and Nelly, that have 100% positive reviews.
