Synopsis
In the 19th century, Maja, a young woman from mainland Finland, is married to the quiet and down-to-earth fisherman Janne and has to leave her familiar home behind. Together they move to the remote island of Stormskär, where life is shaped by the forces of nature and hard work. Here the couple learns to live together, to trust each other and finally to love each other. Over the years, not only do their feelings for each other grow, but so does their mutual respect — carried by a quiet strength that springs from Maja’s change and inner growth. Despite all the adversities and the shadows that the Åland War casts on her life, Maja finds a way to raise her voice and gain a bit of independence.
