International Details - Hedge Still a Success Overseas

August 6th, 2006

Over the Hedge may have slipped out of the top five landing in sixth place this week, but it is still bringing in plenty at the box office. After earning $7.12 million on 3877 screens in 33 markets the film now has $121.76 million internationally and is closing in on its domestic total with several more markets left to open in. Its biggest market was again Germany with $1.49 million on 743 screens over the weekend for a four-week total of $14.26 million. Should it perform well in Japan and Italy, it will have no trouble reaching $300 million worldwide. And while that is low compared to the historical averages for digitally animated films, but is still a great result. More...

Kong Crowned King of the Home Market

April 8th, 2006

King Kong was the best of this week's batch as it easily took top spot on the rental charts with $10.31 million in DVD rentals. This is higher than expected as I had assumed the vast majority of people who were interested in seeing it would buy it, but instead the buyers lead the renters by only a 2 - 1 margin. More...

DVD Releases for March 28, 2006

March 27th, 2006

Pretty good list this week with several contenders for the DVD Pick of the Week. The obvious one is King Kong 2-Disc Special Edition, but I think there will be a super-special edition coming out in November, so you might want to hold off. The Masters of Horror - package deal, Robot Chicken - Volume 1 - Buy from Amazon, and others were also in contention, but in the end I went with Degrassi The Next Generation - Season 3. More...

Corpse Bridesmaid

November 20th, 2005

The Corpse Bride missed the top five by the narrowest of narrow margins losing out to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit $5.50 million to $5.45 million. The film earned its $5.45 million on 2586 screens in 28 markets pushing its total to $53.4 million total at the international box office. In South Korea the film fell 43% to $753,000 on 114 screens, which is better than average for the market. And the film is also doing well in Italy adding $764,000 on 268 screens to its $2.67 million running tally there, $700,000 in France for a $8 million box office, and $462,000 in Japan for a $7.0 million box office. Chicken's Little Start on the International Scene is Lucrative

November 13th, 2005

Chicken Little started its international run with day-and-date debuts in 9 markets earning $5.54 million on 900 screens, just missing the top five in the process. Its best market was kid-friendly Mexico with $3.1 million on 600 screens, which is about on par with its opening domestically. On the other hand, the film broke records in Malaysia with $477,000 on 40 screens. Other results include a first place debuts in Russia with $1.1 million on 197 screens and in Taiwan with $463,000 on 18 screens, (including previews). More...

Box Office Doom

October 24th, 2005

The box office wasn't knee deep in doom, it was more like ankle deep in Doom. With almost every film missing expectations, there was another steep decline at the box office this weekend, at least on the year-to-year comparison. Week-to-week the box office was up just 0.7%, but it was down 16.5% from last year. Year-to-date, 2005 has now brought $6.957 billion, which is about 8% lower than this time last year. More...

Analysts Predict Box Office Doom

October 21st, 2005

Another week, another four movies opening wide. But only one of those films is earning positive reviews. And with the overall weakness in the market, the four films combined openings could be less than last year's number one film. But hopefully the box office numbers will be strong enough to avoid that fate. More...

2005 Preview: October

October 1st, 2005

October is a transition month. No holidays to boost the box office, but at least Halloween will help the few Horror films playing during the month. There are no sure-fire winners this month, nor does there appear to be any major flops. The competition will again hurt box office potentials as there are on average four wide releases each weekend, and that is way too many. Also worth noting, with award season heating up, there are more and more limited releases that could make noise at the box office (Good Night and Good Luck, for example). Discuss the upcoming movies on our forums. More...

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates. This week's list is a little shorter than usual partially because I'm moving today and had to complete the list on Wednesday. Because of this there was no site that really stood out as deserving the Weekly Website Award; perhaps next week there will be two winners. More...
