Synopsis

June 16, 1959. The glamour of Tinseltown permanently fades for actor George Reeves, the heroic Man of Steel on TV’s Adventures of Superman, as the actor dies in his Hollywood Hills home. Felled by a single gunshot wound, Reeves leaves behind a fiancée — aspiring starlet Leonore Lemmon — and millions of fans who are shocked by his death. But it is his grieving mother, Helen Bessolo, who will not let the questionable circumstances surrounding his demise go unaddressed. Helen seeks justice, or at least answers. The Los Angeles Police Department closes the case, but Helen hires — for $50 a day — private detective Louis Simo. Simo soon ascertains that the torrid affair Reeves had with Toni Mannix, the wife of MGM studio executive Eddie Mannix, might hold the key to the truth. But truth and justice are not so easily found in Hollywood. Simo pursues dangerous and elusive leads in both high and low places and, in trying to turn up the heat, risks getting burned. The detective also uncovers unexpected connections to his own life as the case turns more personal and he learns more about Reeves himself. Behind the icon was a complex man who gave his life to Hollywood in more ways than one.

DVD Releases for February 6, 2007

February 5th, 2007

It's the first Tuesday of the month and, like many months, it's a busy week for DVDs. Busy, but not necessarily that strong. Looking at the more than three dozen releases on this week's list, there's little here that I would consider DVD Pick of the Week material. No first-run releases came even close, but there were a trio of other contenders: Eddie Murphy - Delirious - Buy from Amazon, Hellboy - Sword of Storms - Buy from Amazon, and The Science of Sleep - Buy from Amazon. It is safe to say all three will end up in my ever-growing DVD collection, but Eddie Murphy - Delirious - Buy from Amazon alone is the DVD Pick of the Week. I think that's the first time a stand-up concert film has earned that honor. More...

Gang Has to Settle for Field Goal

September 19th, 2006

Not a single film in the top five beat expectations by any significant margin. Even so, with the terrible result last weekend the overall box office was still able to rebound a little, up 7.7% to $78 million. However, that was still 9.0% lower than the same weekend last year. So far the fall season has not kept up the winning ways we saw throughout the summer, but 2006 still has a bit of time to turn things around before we need to worry again. More...

Summer Has Officially Ended

September 12th, 2006

The second weekend in September is quite often the slowest weekend of the year, and that appears to be the case here. Overall the total box office was a mere $71 million. To put that into perspective, if that was earned by just one film this weekend, it would only place fourth on the list of 2006's biggest openings. Needless to say, the overall box office was down this weekend, by a massive 31.3% from the last weekend. Compared to the same weekend last year the decline was smaller at 18.2%, but that was a more devastating result in the overall scheme of things. More...

2006 Preview: September

September 1st, 2006

I've said it before and I'll say it again, September is the worst month of the year for movies. Not only are there usually very few hits released at this time of year, but the average is dragged way down by the large number of movies simply dumped on the market. This year the September dumping ground doesn't look quite as bad as years past. In fact, several low-level hits and maybe even an Oscar contender are opening wide. However, those few bright spots will be buried due to the sheer number of releases -- an average of 3 and a half films are opening wide each week. More...
