DVD Rentals - No New Release can Top Ultimate

December 31st, 2007

DVD Releases for December 26, 2007

December 26th, 2007

This week's a mess when it comes to DVD releases. Since Christmas lands on a Tuesday and no stores are open that day, the regular releases are coming out on Wednesday. However, several releases are hitting shelves on Sunday as a last minute Christmas gift, some of which I mentioned last week. Because of this, this is literally the weakest week I've seen in a long time, perhaps since I've been doing this job. It did give me a chance to catch up on a couple of DVDs that arrived late, and there is one DVD on this week's list worthy of a DVD Pick of the Week. The best of the bunch is Pan's Labyrinth and I would have to give the Blu-Ray the nod for DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Contest - Holiday Horrorfest

December 21st, 2007

There are some of us who think Halloween isn't the scariest holiday of the year, but Christmas deserves that title much, much more. Which explains why this week we are giving away not one, not two, but four horror DVDs (and those are not the only prizes). However, there's an added twist. Since there are no wide releases next Friday, instead of one target film, we are looking for the combined box office for the top ten films. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the box office for the combined top ten films over the 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Hatchet - Unrated Director's Cut and Welcome To the Jungle, as well as the non-horror DVD, Sonic Underground: The Series. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the box office for the combined top ten films over the 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of Hatchet - Unrated Director's Cut and Undead or Alive, as well as the non-horror DVD, Sonic Underground: The Series. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for December 18, 2007

December 18th, 2007

Another deceptively weak week for DVDs. Sure, there appear to be plenty to choose from, but it feels like half the top 20 are Blade Runner releases. In fact, one of the two DVD Picks of the Week are for that movie. For those who are big fans of Blade Runner, grab the Four-Disc Collector's Edition - DVD, or 5-Disc Collector's Edition - Blu-Ray or 5-Disc Collector's Edition - HD-DVD if you can. (Given the choice between those last two, pick 5-Disc Collector's Edition - Blu-Ray.) For those who are huge fans of Blade Runner, and I mean stupid level fans of the movie, grab 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - DVD, 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - Blu-Ray, or 5-Disc Ultimate Edition - HD-DVD. But good luck, I pre-ordered mine months ago and there are reports they are sold out in many places. The second DVD Pick of the Week goes to The Simpsons Movie - Blu-Ray. The light extras are disappointing, but that transfer is immaculate. More...

Someone to Watch Limited Releases With

September 7th, 2007

It's still too early for Oscar worthy films to come up, but we do have a few films that are scoring with critics. The best of these is In the Shadow of the Moon, but my personal choice is I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With. Regardless, it will be tough for any of the films on this weeks list to see their theater count expand to triple digits. More...

2007 Preview: September

September 1st, 2007

After a record-breaking summer, we come to the worst month of the year. There are a few films that look promising, but for the most part the month is filled with projects that should probably never been given the greenlight to begin with. September is a dumping ground for failed projects, and like most similar times of the year, it is crowded with 20 movies that at least have a shot at opening or expanding wide over a period of just four weeks. Five new releases a week is far too many, even if they were all high quality at least half will fail just due to the competition. More...
