Contest - So Goes the Nation

October 24th, 2008

Next week the widest release of the week is Zack and Miri Make a Porno, but despite our intense interest in that movie, it is not the most interesting race going on. The most interesting race is between John McCain and Barack Obama, and it is this race that is the target of this week's poorly named Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict how many electoral college votes are won by each candidate in the United States presidential election that happens on November 4th, 2008. You need to give your prediction for the number of electoral college votes won by John McCain and Barack Obama, as reported by CNN.com at noon on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008. Note that if one or more states have not been called by CNN by noon on Wednesday, they will not be included on either candidate's electoral college total for the purposes of the contest, even though they will eventually be awarded one way or another. We expect a lot of entries, and a tie at the top, so the tie breaker will go to the person who can come the closest to correctly predicting the total popular vote for whichever candidate is leading in the popular vote, without going over, again as report by CNN.com at noon on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008. Whoever comes out on top will win ...So Goes the Nation on DVD, as well as some non-political movies: Pathology on DVD, The Happening on DVD, and Joy Ride 2 - Dead Ahead on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Monday, November 3, to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for October 14, 2008 - Part II

October 15th, 2008

The DVD Release Report finally comes out this week after a couple of delays. At least it is worth the wait as one of the most anticipated films of the year, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, comes out on both Two-Disc Collector's Edition and Blu-ray. This release is clearly the DVD Pick of the Week, either format, while there are so many other releases that the list had to split into two. You can find the first part here. More...

Contest - Express Delivery

October 3rd, 2008

The widest release of next week is The Express, which is an inspirational sports movie, which tend to be predictable players at the box office. It is also the target film on this week's Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of The Express. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a mini-poster from How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, a copy of South Of Pico on DVD, Pathology on DVD, Cyborg Solider on DVD, and finally Kill Switch on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a mini-poster from How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, as well as Cyborg Solider on DVD, Kill Switch on DVD, as well as Deception on DVD. Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen at random to receive the final copies of Cyborg Solider on DVD and Kill Switch on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for September 23, 2008 - Part II

September 23rd, 2008

Aaaahhhhhh! POP! ... That sound you just heard was my head exploding. This week we had a new record for spotlight reviews, and with TV on DVD kicking into high gear and summer blockbusters starting to come out soon, I don't think it will slow down. (Additionally, I have close to a dozen DVDs that arrived late, and I was only able to get to less than half of them for this week. So look for another huge batch next week.) As for the quality releases, there were a few that caught my eye, but none more than The Godfather Trilogy on Blu-ray. Sure, it doesn't push the high definition format, but this is the best these films have looked in decades and any film buff will want to have them in their collection. Meanwhile, last week's release of Duckman - Season One and Two also deserves to be awarded the DVD Pick of the Week. While there are not as many releases this week as last, there are so many spotlight reviews that the list had to be split into to. Part II can be found here. More...

Where in the World are the Limited Releases

April 18th, 2008

There are plenty of limited releases this week, but none are earning amazing reviews. In fact, most are earning below 50% positive.
