With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we look at Best Adapted Screenplay, which is one of the categories that I think could give us a surprise.

Oscar nominations were announced at 5:38 this morning, continuing a tradition that have never been adequately explained to me. (Why so early in the morning? Does earning an Oscar nomination become sweeter if people have to wake you up to congratulate you?) Leading the way in nominations were Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both of which pick up nine nods each, many of them in the same categories.

As it is usually true at this time of year, there are very few major releases hitting the home market this week.
Most of the films on this week's list that opened wide were critics and / or box office disappointments, but at least there are a number of smaller films to pick up the slack. This includes Big Fan, which features what should be a star making performance by Patton Oswald, but the DVD isn't exactly loaded with extras. That's not an issue with Moon, as both the DVD and the Blu-ray are loaded with extras. The best release of the week is arguably The Hurt Locker and both its DVD and Blu-ray are Pick of the Week material. However, it is likely that it will be joined by Transformers - Season 2 - Volume 2, once the screener arrives.

Not a single film reached the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this weekend.
In fact, there weren't even any films that came close.
The best movie overall was The September Issue with an average of just $7,303, which was one fifth of its opening per theater average.
Granted it did triple its theater count this past weekend, so a decline in its per theater average was expected, but it also saw its overall box office fall by a third.
The best new release of the week was All About Steve, which was only halfway there at $4,994.

It Might Get Loud led the way on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $13,240 in seven theaters, which suggests some potential for expansion. District 9 was relatively close behind with an average of $12,251.

In the Loop lead the way on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $23,983, and with its reviews, it should be able to expand significantly. (500) Days of Summer landed in second place with an average of $19,244, which is about a third less than its opening weekend average. But it is now playing in 85 theaters, which is more than triple its opening weekend theater count, so this is a fantastic hold. Those were the only films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Ugly Truth came relatively close with $9,579.

There were seven releases this week, including three wide releases. All three wide releases have websites that are at least average, with two have substantial extras, and one, G-Force's Official Site being worthy of the Weekly Website Award.

Summer is starting to come to a close on the limited release front, just as it is for wide releases. There are few releases in total, none of which seem destined to big hits theatrically, but two or three of them could find more receptive audiences on the home market.
