"Development Hell" Movies

← See all keywords

Movies that had a very difficult development period. Issues can include the loss of multiple important members of the cast or crew, or even entire production companies going bankrupt during the production. Other examples include a ballooning production budget or massive reshoots / extreme editing after poor test screenings. On very rare occasions, a film can even be dragged back into development hell after it is finished, although it takes a real world tragedy causing the finish film to be changed, or a massive scandal on par with the #MeToo movement for this to happen. Anything less than that is just a delayed release. While development hell is never fun, it doesn’t mean the end film can’t be a success. For example, Jaws had an incredibly difficult production due to a malfunctioning main prop, but it is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made.
