Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: The Eras Tour holds off Five Nights at Freddy’s to remain widest release

October 26th, 2023

TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR

Despite dropping 82 locations this week, TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR will remain the widest release for the third consecutive week, still available in a 3,773 theaters, outpacing a bevy of newcomers, including the supernatural horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s as it makes its way into theaters. The concert film will likely fall into second place at the box office, but there are still plenty of opportunities to see the mega event on the big screen. More...

Weekend predictions: Exorcist is shrugging off poor reviews and heading to weekend win

October 6th, 2023

The Exorcist: Believer

The Exorcist: Believer is technically the sixth movie in The Exorcist franchise, and the second attempt at rebooting the series (does anyone remember 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning?). Critics haven’t generally been kind to this attempted resurrection, and, although audiences seem to enjoy it more, it looks like it won’t get good word of mouth. That won’t be enough to stop it from handily winning the weekend. More...

Theater counts: PAW Patrol’s 4,027 theaters beats The Exorcist

October 5th, 2023

The Creator

Second week is a charm for the latest in the PAW Patrol series as Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie increases its paw print this week, expanding from just under 4,000 locations, into 4,027 theaters. That count is the widest a film has been since Barbie posted 4,178 locations back on August 10th. The animated feature chewed up $22.74 million in its opening weekend, outshining its nearest competitor by over $4 million. This week will see another franchise film take to the big screen in the way of The Exorcist: Believer, along with another horror movie and a bewitching Halloween favorite, returning to theaters for its 30th anniversary. Theater counts: The Creator lands on top as trio of new films arrive in cinemas

September 28th, 2023

The Creator

After a lackluster few weeks, this weekend sees three new films open wide, along with an even wider expansion for Dumb Money. While none of this week’s new arrivals will likely make a monumental splash, they should nevertheless deliver a fun and competitive weekend at the domestic box office, while providing movie aficionados with a wider range of genres to choose from. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 23rd, 2014

September 23rd, 2014

This is both a great week on the home market, as well as an amazing week on the home market. There are by my count, at least a dozen releases that could be considered must haves or perfect Christmas gifts, which is great. What makes it amazing is the lack of filler. There are a couple of weak releases here and there, but the hit to miss ratio is as good as I can remember. The biggest release of the week, according to Amazon.com, is the Halloween Complete Collection, but it is not the best release. Contenders for Pick of the Week include a couple of limited releases: Ida - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and We Are the Best! - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray. However, in the end I went with a TV on DVD release, Modern Family: Season Five - Buy from Amazon: DVD. More...
