Blu-ray Sales: Furious Debut

February 14, 2015

New releases dominated the Blu-ray sales chart, again. There were three new releases in the top three spots, while newcomers earned five of the top six spots. Leading the way was Fury with 432,000 units / $8.80 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 55%, which is great for this type of film. It is an action film, but not a visual effects action film. The Book of Life opened in second place with 167,000 units / $3.41 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 49%, which is good, but not great, for a digitally animated film. The Judge earned third place with 119,000 units / $2.63 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 39%. This is surprisingly strong for a drama. Lucy fell to fourth place with 97,000 / $2.17 million for the week for totals of 521,000 units / $10.87 million after two. Rounding out the top five was Justice League: Throne of Atlantis with 86,000 units / $1.51 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 63%. Its a Fanboy film, so it was expected to sell well on Blu-ray compared to the DVD.

Downton Abbey: Season 5 just missed the top five with 80,000 units / $2.21 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 21%. On the other hand, this isn't that bad for TV on DVD release, especially for a drama aimed at a more mature target demographic. The final new release to chart was a Fury / Company of Heroes 2-Pack, which landed in 11th place with 25,000 units / $887,000.
