Blu-ray Sales: January 13th, 2013: Dredd is Feeling Blu

New releases dominated the top five of the Blu-ray sales chart for the week of January 13th, 2003. Dredd led the way in terms of units with 184,000 units, but was second in terms of revenue with $3.68 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 37%, which is weak for an action film like this.
Frankenweenie led the way in terms of revenue with $4.81 million, but was second in terms of units with 172,000. An opening week Blu-ray share of 36% isn't bad for a kids film, especially one that's not digitally animated. Looper fell to third place with 88,000 units / $2.19 million for the week giving it totals of 416,000 units / $9.08 million after two. House at the End of the Street earned fourth place with 58,000 units / $1.16 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 22%. Not acceptable. Hit and Run rounded out the top five with 41,000 units / $944,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 41%. Its Blu-ray share was the only really strong number in its run so far.
Seal Team Six: The Raid of Osama Bin Laden opened in 12th place with 31,000 units / $519,000. This is still higher than expected; although its opening week Blu-ray share was tiny at 14%. Stolen was right behind in 13th place with 27,000 units / $398,000 during its first week of release. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 17%, which was weak, but not unexpected. Archer: Season Three barely managed a spot in the top 30 with 10,000 units / $237,000. However, an opening week Blu-ray share of 15% isn't terrible for TV on DVD.
The overall Blu-ray market was again weak. It fell 28% in terms of units and 27% in terms of revenue when compared to last week. It also fell 6% in terms of units when compared to last year, but revenue was 7% higher, so at least there's that. DVD sales hung on better when compared to last week down 16% in terms of units and 19% in terms of revenue. It actually grew compared to last year, up 18% and 19%. The overall Blu-ray share shrunk again to just fell to 26% in terms of units and 33% in terms of revenue. We need to see a rebound in the Blu-ray sales, and soon.
Next week, Taken 2 will lead the new releases to the top of the DVD and Blu-ray sales chart. However, it might be the only new release to reach the top 30 on either. Last year, the new releases were led by Courageous on DVD and The Ides of March on Blu-ray. If Taken 2 doesn't perform better than that this year, we are in serious trouble.
