Per Theater Chart: Moviegoers are put in a Trace

April 9, 2013

The buzz certainly helped Trance, as it earned first place on the per theater chart with an average of $32,786 in four theaters. This is not quite as good as Danny Boyle's previous two limited releases, but if it doesn't reach at least one major milestone, I would be shocked. Upstream Color rode the best reviews of the week to second place with $28,649 in its lone theater. The Company You Keep was right behind with an average of $26,344 in five theaters. Mixed reviews will likely hold down its potential to expand. The Place Beyond the Pines was the only holdover to reach the $10,000 mark. It expanded to 30 theaters, but still managed an impressive average of $23,446.

There were quite a few other new limited releases, some of which did quite well, while others struggled. No Place on Earth was in the former category with an average of $6,907 in two theaters. Simon Killer debuted in one theater earning $5,054. Free Angela and All Political Prisoners earned an average of $4,332 in 16 theaters, which isn't bad for a documentary playing that wide. Down the Shore was weak with an average of just $2,404 in two theaters, while The Brass Teapot was right behind with an average of $2,234, also in two theaters. Settai was playing in 33 theaters, which is not a lot for a Bollywood release, but struggled with an average of just $1,587. Bert Stern: Original Mad Man was well back with an average of $1,173 in four theaters. Eddie The Sleepwalking Cannibal earned barely more than $1,000 in five theaters for an average of $203.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Place Beyond the Pines expanded significantly this past weekend and that helped it reach $1 million. This won't be the last expansion, nor will it be the last milestone.
  • The Gatekeepers made it to $2 million, which is good for a documentary, but getting $3 million will be tough.
  • Emperor surpassed $3 million over the weekend, but that's likely as far as it will go.
