DVD Sales: March 3rd, 2013: Breaking Dawn Breaks 2013 Record

April 19, 2013

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 dominated the new releases and easily took first place on the March 3rd, 2013 edition of the DVD sales chart. It sold 2.12 million units and generated $31.64 million, and did so during a shortened sales week. (It came out on Friday.) Second place went to a Breaking Dawn double-pack, which was an exclusive release. The double-shot sold an additional 418,00 units and generated $16.70 million more in sales. Add them together, and this film is already the best selling DVD of 2013, at least so far.

Argo was pushed to second place with 283,000 units / $4.23 million for the week giving it totals of 846,000 units / $12.67 million after two. This is not a bad run, but it isn't great either. Fortunately, the film is doing relatively better on Blu-ray. Barbie in the Pink Shoes debuted in fourth place with 231,000 units / $2.31 million. This is great for a direct-to-DVD release, but a little low for the franchise average. Skyfall rounded out the top five with 179,000 units / $3.57 million over the week for a totals 1.65 million units / $28.88 million after three.

There were a couple of other new releases to chart, but they both struggled. Chasing Mavericks only managed 18th place with 49,000 units / $635,000. That's a disaster, but so was its theatrical run. The Master could only manage meager sales of 35,000 units / $550,000 landing in 24th place in the process. This isn't bad for a limited release, but most people were expecting it to expand truly wide during its domestic run.
