Per Theater Chart: Filly Brown is In the House

There was only one film in the $10,000 club this week, In the House, which earned an average of $11,738 in three theaters. However, Filly Brown had a more impressive opening with $1.48 million in 188 theaters for an average of $7,863. You rarely see limited releases playing in that many theaters earning that high a per theater average.

The new releases were mostly mixed. Home Run earned an average of $4,153, which normally would be mixed. However, it was playing in 381 theaters, which is a mitigating factor. On the other hand, Herman's House was only playing in one theater, so it's harder to be happy with its $3,552 opening. Pawn didn't miss the Mendoza Line like I feared it would, but it came close with $2,137 in its lone theater. The Lords of Salem wasn't as lucky with an average of $1,808 in 355 theaters. It will likely perform better on the home market. Haute Cuisine only earned an average of $560 in three theaters during its American debut. It performed much better when it opened in Canada earlier.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• There were two limited releases that opened with more than $1 million over the weekend, starting with Home Run. Its per theater average suggests it won't expand significantly, while its reviews suggest only moderate legs.
• Filly Brown also opened with more than $1 million. On the other hand, its per theater average is large enough that it might expand a little bit more, so it should hit more milestones in the end.
• The Sapphires crossed $1 million after a month of release. It might get to $2 million, but it is not a sure thing.
• No has some positive news, as it topped $2 million over the weekend.
• The Place Beyond the Pines made it all the way to $10 million over the weekend, and while it likely won't expand much further, it should still reach a couple more milestones.
