Blu-ray Sales: Holdovers Slay New Releases

September 12, 2013

There were only three new releases to chart on the June 30th, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart, but all three of them reached the top ten. That said, Jack the Giant Killer remained in first place with 90,000 units / $2.24 million over the week for a total of 313,000 units / $7.40 million after two. Oz the Great and Powerful remained in second place with 82,000 units / $2.29 million over the week. After three weeks of release, the film has sold 673,000 units and generated $18.82 million in revenue. The Call placed third with 78,000 units / $1.82 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 26%, which is below expectations. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was relatively stronger with an opening week of 57,000 units / $1.32 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 39%, which is very high for a comedy. Like it did on the DVD chart, Despicable Me rose to fifth place. It sold 48,000 units / $708,000, while its running tally rose to 2.57 million units and $62.63 million. This puts it in the top 15 on the All-time Blu-ray Sales Chart. As the franchise grows, it could reach 3 million units, which is a very rare milestone for the format.

The only other new release to chart this week was Upside Down, which placed tenth with 25,000 units / $434,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 39%. That's great for a limited release.
