Blu-ray Sales: Despicable Has Virtuous Result

September 19, 2013

New releases were even worse on the July 7th, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart than they were on the DVD sales chart. Leading the way was Despicable Me with 88,000 units / $1.23 million for the week and 2.35 million units / $58.37 million after more than two-and-a-half years of release. This puts it just outside of the top 20 on the All-Time Blu-ray Chart, and it has already made it there as of the writing of this column. Jack the Giant Killer was pushed into second place with 63,000 units / $1.57 million for the week giving it totals of 376,000 units / $8.97 million after three weeks of release. Had it opened with this much, it would have been a disappointment. Oz the Great and Powerful was right behind with 62,000 units / $1.72 million. After nearly a month of release, the film has sold 734,000 units / $20.54 million. This is acceptable and should be enough to push the film into profitability. Identity Thief jumped back into the top five with 42,000 units / $1.00 million for the week and 466,000 units / $10.19 million after just over a month of release. This film broke even based on its domestic theatrical run, so this result is pure gravy. The final film in the top five was A Good Day to Die Hard, which sold 38,000 units / $776,000 for the week for a total of 568,000 units / $10.49 million after five weeks of release. It bombed domestically, but it did well enough internationally that it likely will break even. I don't think it will do well enough to justify extending the franchise.

The best new release was An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky, which only managed 15th place with 15,000 units / $268,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 12.5%, which is not bad for a live-action kids movie. 6 Souls barely earned a spot in the top 30. It opened in 27th place with 5,000 units / $87,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share with just 11%. Its overall home market debut was terrible, but this is a particularly bad result.
