Weekend Estimates: Gravity Floats to Third Weekend Win

Gravity will become the first film in 2013 to win three straight three-day weekends, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With $31 million expected, the film is down just 28% from last weekend and has reached a formidable $170.5 million. That puts in in the top 10 for the year, with plenty more to come. Fellow Oscar-hopefuls 12 Years a Slave, All is Lost and Kill Your Darlins are the other films making waves this weekend (literally in one case).
This isn't a good weekend for new wide releases. Carrie is the best-performing of the lot with $16.3 million, well below the hopes for the film going in to the weekend, but not as dreadful as the debuts of Escape Plan ($9.65 million from 2,883 theaters) and particularly The Fifth Estate ($1.7 million in 2,011 theaters and an average under $1,000).
The rest of the top 10 looks pretty buoyant though. Aside from Gravity's 28% drop, Enough Said will be off just 6%, Captain Phillips will decline only 35% in its second weekend, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is set to drop a healthy 27% in its fourth weekend, moving within shouting distance of $100 million in the process.
The top limited release, by a mile, this weekend is 12 Years a Slave, which is projected to earn $960,000 from 19 locations. Its average of $50,526 is one of the highest this year, and its stellar reviews make it the film to watch over the next few weeks.
Slightly less spectacular, but impressive nonetheless, is All is Lost, which will take in about $95,000 from 6 theaters for an average just shy of $16,000. (Roadside Attraction's official estimate has not yet been released, and may vary slightly from this figure.) The other limited release doing great business this weekend is Kill Your Darlings with about $59,000 from four theaters for an average of $14,750.
All-in-all, a good weekend to go see a movie, whatever your tastes.
