Weekend Estimates: Mission Impossible Continues to Top Chart

January 1, 2012

Mission: Impossible will enjoy another weekend at the top of the chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday, and 2011 will end on a small uptick from 2010, but a lackluster Holiday Season overall will cap a year where the total box office will fall around 3% and ticket sales will be down 4%, making the year as a whole the worst for ticket sales since 1995 (full historical analysis here).

With no new wide releases, the weekend chart has a familiar look. War Horse moves up a few spots to 4th thanks to playing for all three days of the weekend compared to only Sunday last week. New Year's Eve enjoyed a predictably good night on Saturday (although it is likely to plummet from now on). The Descendants is also having a good weekend after a dip around Christmas.

In limited release, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is continuing an impressive run in limited release and will likely see a lot of business as attention turns to the Awards Season to come. Top of the Per Theater Chart will be claimed by The Iron Lady, which will earn about $220,000 from just four theaters. A Separation will also post good numbers with $67,000 projected from three venues.
