DVD Sales: Moneyball Doesn't Hit a Home Run, but gets a Solid Double

January 24, 2012

Moneyball led all new releases and the overall DVD sales chart with 601,000 units / $10.22 million during its first week of release. Boardwalk Empire: Season One was a distant second with 225,000 units / $6.75 million; however, this is still a strong showing for a TV on DVD release. The Killer Elite was right behind with 219,000 units during its first week of sales, which was enough to generate $3.72 million in revenue. Unfortunately for the studio, this was an expensive movie to make, so this isn't enough to be a financial hit. Contagion fell from first to fourth with 193,000 units / $2.89 million for the week giving it totals of 604,000 unit s/ $9.05 million after two. The Hangover II hung onto a spot in the top five with 163,000 units / $1.59 million for the week, which lifted its totals to 3.29 million units / $42.09 million after six weeks of release.

What's Your Number? missed the top five landing in seventh place with 138,000 units / $1.95 million. It bombed in theaters, so this result in no surprise. The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption opened in tenth place with $103,000 units / $1.69 million during its opening week of release. This is a surprise, as I was not expecting a second direct-to-DVD sequel to a spin-off to do much business on the home market.
