DVD Sales: Four Hundred Thousand Reunite with American Pie Franchise

July 23rd, 2012

New releases were not exactly plentiful this week on the DVD sales chart, but we did have a new film on top of the chart. American Reunion sold 411,000 units and generated $6.57 million in opening week sales. That's below expectations, but it also struggled theatrically, so it's not a surprise. 21 Jump Street was pushed into second place with 189,000 units / $3.39 million for the week, giving it a total of 1.24 million units / $21.61 million after three. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows rose to third place with 133,000 units / $1.66 million over the week. After more than a month of release, the film has sold 2.27 million units and generated $32.85 million in revenue and is one of the best selling DVDs of the year. Mirror Mirror fell to fourth place with 127,000 units / $2.41 million for the week. It has now sold 933,000 units and generated $15.75 million after three weeks of release. Wrath of the Titans rounded out the top five with 122,000 units / $1.83 million for the week. Its running tally is now 880,000 units / $13.16 million, also after three weeks of release.

Adventure Time: Season One just missed the top five with 89,000 units / $1.61 million. This is very good for a TV on DVD release, especially one aimed at kids. Hopefully more studios will take note and release full season sets of cartoons. (I'm looking at you, Disney.) The only other new release to chart was Warehouse 13: Season Three, which landed in eighth place with 70,000 units / $1.75 million.
