DVD Sales: New Releases in a Feud with Holdovers

August 14th, 2012

There were not a lot of new releases to make an impact on the DVD sales chart this week. However, we did have a new number one, as Hatfields and McCoys DVD sold 363,000 units and generated $7.25 million in revenue. That's an excellent start for a TV mini-series. The Three Stooges was pushed into second place with 124,000 units / $2.50 million over the week for a total of 752,000 units / $15.04 million after three. This film was mediocre at the box office and it is doing the same on the home market. LOL opened in third place with 105,000 units / $1.47 million. That's really good for a Direct-to-DVD release and it probably could have handled a wide release. It wouldn't have been a major hit, but it would have improved its chances on DVD as well. The Dark Knight remained in fourth place with 103,000 units / $678,000. The film has pulled in $260.08 million in revenue from 17.23 million units sold. These are numbers that will likely never be reached again. Nothing that could sell this many units will sell more DVDs than Blu-rays ever again. American Reunion fell to fifth place with 89,000 units / $1.61 million over the week for a total of 801,000 units / $14.06 million after four. It was disappointing in theaters and it is disappointing on the home market.

No other new releases reached the top 30.
