DVD Sales: Lucky To Win

September 12, 2012

There were a ton of new releases on this week's DVD sales chart with four in the top five and nine in the top eleven. We have a new number one release, The Lucky One, with 515,000 units sold and $7.70 million in revenue generated during its first week of release. This is a solid opening for a midlevel hit. The Hunger Games was right behind for the week in terms of units with 511,000 units, while it was number one in terms of dollars with $9.76 million. It is also right behind Breaking Dawn, Part 1 on the 2012 chart with 5.12 million units / $88.10 million after two full weeks and two days of release. It will be in first place shortly. Think Like a Man earned third place with 417,000 units / $7.09 million, which is weaker than expected. Battleship was fourth with 371,000 units / $6.38 million. This is terrible given its production budget, but it performed much better on Blu-ray. Sons of Anarchy: Season Four rounded out the top five with 288,000 units / $6.36 million. This is very strong for a TV on DVD release.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season just missed the top five with 213,000 units / $5.32 million. Once Upon a Time: The Complete First Season managed eighth place with 114,000 units / $3.54 million. Pirates! Band of Misfits really struggled in ninth place with 110,000 units / $1.87 million. Given its reviews, it deserved better. Rounding out the top ten was Homeland: Season One with 87,000 units / $1.73 million, while Boardwalk Empire: Season Two was the final new release to chart in eleventh place with 66,000 units / $1.99 million.
