DVD Sales: Avengers Earns an A Minus

The Avengers dominated a lengthy list of new releases and sold roughly 20 times the number of DVDs of the second place release on this week's DVD sales chart. It sold 2.09 million units and generated $35.41 million in opening weekend revenue. This is a good start on the home market, but not great compared to the film's theatrical run. In fact, it wasn't even the best opening of the year, as both The Hunger Games and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 sold more during their first week of release, and they both had shortened opening weeks. That said, it is already in eighth place for the year and this film did much better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD. More on that very shortly.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3 was way back in second place with 103,000 units / $2.06 million over the week for a total of 404,000 units / $7.17 million. This is great for a direct-to-DVD sequel. Snow White and the Huntsman was next with 98,000 units / $1.97 million for the week giving it a total of 1.10 million units / $19.75 million after three. American Horror Story: Season One opened in fourth place with 81,000 units / $2.02 million during its first week on the home market. This isn't bad for a TV on DVD release, especially a cable show. The Hunger Games rose to fifth place with 78,000 units / $1.46 million, giving it a total of 5.78 million units / $100.95 million after just over a month of release. There are very few DVDs that generate $100 million in sales, so this is a great result for this film.
Family Guy: Volume Ten debuted in seventh place with 72,000 units / $1.44 million. People Like Us opened in ninth place with 64,000 units / $1.28 million in a rollout restricted to a select group of retailers in its first week. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 earned tenth place with 61,000 units / $651,000. This isn't great, but it did much better on Blu-ray. Resident Evil: Damnation opened in 21st place with 33,000 units / $490,000. This is much weaker than Degeneration's opening. Finally, The Tall Man also charted, barely, earning 30th spot with 24,000 units / $249,000. The film is practically a direct-to-DVD release and most of those fail to reach the top 30, so the studio shouldn't be too upset.
