Per Theater Chart is Very Lively

June 1st, 2011

It was another amazing week on the per theater chart as The Tree of Life led the way with an average of $93,230 in four theaters. This represents the best per screen average for the director and for the distributor. Add in reviews that might be Oscar-worthy, and the film should expand over the coming weeks / months. Speaking of expanding, and Oscar -worthy reviews, Midnight in Paris saw its theater count grow from 6 to 58, while its per theater average held on strong at $33,268. The overall number one film, The Hangover 2, was next with an average of $23,775, while Kung Fu Panda 2 was the only other film to cross the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart with an average of $12,142.

The rest of the new limited releases were pretty quiet with only Tueday, After Christmas doing reasonable well. It opened with $6,472 in one theater over the weekend while it made $8,359 since Wednesday. Pianomania just avoided the Mendoza Line with $2,238 in one theater, while United Red Army was not as lucky with just $1,161 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Everything Must Go hit $2 million late in the weekend and despite the decline in its per theater average, it might have a shot at $3 million. Maybe.
  • Cave of Forgotten Dreams also made it to $2 million, but it did so early last week. It's almost guaranteed to reach $3 million, while getting to $4 million shouldn't be too difficult at this point.
  • Midnight in Paris has already topped $2 million, $3 million if you include Monday, and the only question now is whether or not it will expand wide enough to graduate from this list. Although even if it does reach the top five and expand truly wide, it might be fun to track it as it surpasses other Woody Allen films.
