DVD Sales: Victory Lap for Cars 2

November 16, 2011

While there were only four new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's DVD Sales Chart, three of them took the top three spots. Cars 2 earned first place with ease, selling 1.98 million units and generating $31.24 million in opening week sales. Crazy, Stupid, Love placed second with 495,000 units / $7.55 million, while Water for Elephants was right behind with 432,000 units / $6.78 million. Captain America: The First Avenger fell from first to fourth with 280,000 units / $5.03 million for the week, giving it totals of 981,000 units / $17.15 million after two. It sold about 50% more Blu-rays during its first week than it sold DVDs in two. Winnie the Pooh rounded out the top five with 95,000 units / $1.61 million. Its two-week totals of 279,000 units / $4.88 million are disappointing and it deserves a better fate.

The only other new release to chart was Trespass, which landed in 14th place with 53,000 units / $800,000. I can't imagine this is what the studio was expecting when they sunk $35 million into making this movie.
