DVD Sales: Cars 2 Retakes Lead Thanks to Black Friday

December 6, 2011

Cars 2 returned to top spot on the DVD Sales Chart this week thanks in part to Black Friday sales. Over the week it sold 1.06 million units, lifting its totals to 3.86 million units / $61.14 million putting into fourth place for 2011. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 slipped to second place with 716,000 units / $10.02 million for the week and totals of $4.69 million / $69.28 million after three. It is currently in third place for the year and may climb a little higher before all is said and done. Bridesmaids returned to the top five for the first time in seven weeks with the best weekly totals since its opening week. It sold 655,000 units and generated $3.92 million in sales, giving it totals of 3.02 million units / $41.66 million. The Hangover is an even older release popping back into the top five since February, 2010. It sold 643,000 units / $4.17 million. After nearly two years of release, it has sold 11.43 million units / $183.40 million. I don't think we are going to see those numbers again. The Blind Side popped back into the top five for the first time since, well, since exactly this time last year. This time around it added 637,000 units / $4.04 million to its totals, which now stand at 8.36 million units / $107.21 million.

The best of the new releases was Super 8, which barely grabbed a spot in the top ten with 413,000 units / $7.02 million. Conan the Barbarian opened in 17th place with 236,000 units / $3.54 million, while A Madea Christmas: The Play was right behind with 227,000 units / $3.40 million.
