Summer Nearly Ends on the Per Theater Chart

August 17, 2010

One of the ways of telling when summer is over, is when the number one film on the overall box office chart doesn't top the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. That didn't happen this weekend, but it came close, as The Expendables was the only film to earn better than $10,000 on the per theater chart, and it was close with an average of $10,650.

The best of the new limited releases, Animal Kingdom, was close behind with an average of $9,155 in seven theaters. Peepli Live opened with just over $350,000 in 64 theaters for an average of $5,470. Sadly, its legs will likely be so short it won't reach $1 million. Three other new releases all finished between $4,000 and $5,000, led by La Soga at $4,778, while Neshoba was right behind with $4,645. Finally, Tales from Earthsea opened with an average of $4,123, but it will likely find a more receptive audience on the home market.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • I Am Love hit $4 million just before the weekend, but $5 million is probably out of reach.
  • The Girl Who Played With Fire got to $5 million. With an important cast member announced this week, it could have a bump at the box office, but even so, $10 million seems completely out of reach.
  • The Kids are All Right made it all the way to $15 million before the weekend, and while it has peaked at the box office and is losing theaters, it might still get to $20 million before it is done.
