Home Market Dreaming of a Good Night

May 11, 2007

For the past few weeks, new releases have dominated the home market, and while this week saw two holdovers in the top two spots, there were still plenty of new releases to place high on the charts. Leading the way were Night at the Museum with $9.08 million for the week and $20.64 million overall with Deja vu remaining in second place with $7.02 million this past week and $15.66 million in total. Second place went to Déjà vu with $7.02 million during this past week lifting its total to $15.66 million after two. (I promise, that is the last déjà vu joke I do. ... Unless they release a special edition.) The best of the new releases was Dreamgirls with $6.74 million, however, the film was much stronger on the sales chart. The final holdover in the top five was The Queen, which added $5.96 million to its running tally of $13.47 million. Rounding out the top five was Alpha Dog with $4.81 million, which was a more than respectable start given its theatrical struggles.

The Hitcher was the best of the rest placing seventh with $4.63 million while Little Children placed ninth with $4.40 million. The last new release of the week was Happily N'ever After with just $3.09 million. On the other hand, that film was much, much stronger on the sales chart.

Speaking of the sales chart, Dreamgirls led the way nearly doubling the sales of the second place Night at the Museum. Third place went to Happily N'ever After, which benefited from its younger target demographic. A pair of holdovers, Déjà vu and The Queen, rounded out the top five.

Just missing that mark was Alpha Dog while The Hitcher placed eighth. The direct-to-DVD Sandlot 3 earned ninth spot, which will likely mean another sequel in the franchise will be coming out soon. Beverly Hills, 90210 - The Second Season was the first of two TV on DVD releases to chart placing twelfth. Little Children earned 16th place, but that is still a very strong start for a smaller release. Finally, Will & Grace - Season Six opened in 19th place.
