Weekend Estimates: Surf's Up for Fantastic Four

June 17, 2007

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made a good start at the box office over the weekend, earning $57.4 million, according to Fox's Sunday estimate. That's about on par with the $56 million opening achieved by the first movie in the franchise a couple of years ago, and vindicates the studio's decision to go ahead with a sequel, despite the lukewarm reception to Fantastic Four. If it manages a similar week-to-week performance, Silver Surfer should be another profitable outing, and guarantee another episode for the franchise.

The rest of the field performed reasonably solidly, although the other two openers were weak. Nancy Drew earned an estimated $7.135 million to place 7th, somewhat below tracking estimates, but not terrible. DOA: Dead or Alive, however, was a disaster, earning just $232,000 in 505 theaters and struggling even to make the top 20.
