International Top Five - Shrek the First

Shrek the Third managed to grow, albeit by a tiny amount, adding $47.29 million on 5,737 screens in 45 markets for a total of $170.44 million. The film opened in a pair of major markets scoring first place in Germany with $7.84 million on 861 screens and a nearly identical $7.77 million on 687 screens in Spain. While these numbers are impressive, they are not up to the same level as Shrek 2 managed. On the other hand, it had the best openig of the year and the franchise in Belgium with $2.47 million on 125 screens, including midweek numbers. Holdovers continue to be a problem as the film was down 42% in France, the second worst in the top ten, adding $7.62 million on 8750 screens for a $22.22 million running tally. In Mexico is was even worse down 56% to $3.82 million on 417 screens over the weekend and $17.23 million in total

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer rose to second place with $22.1 million on 8,451 screens in 44 markets for a running tally of $57 million. The film was aided by openings in two major markets earning first place in Mexico with $5.71 million on 1063 screens while in Australia it was still able to earn first but with a more subdued $2.50 million on 343 screens. Its best holdover market was the U.K. where it was down a reasonable 46% to $4.52 million on 481 screens for a two-week total of $15.85 million. In Italy it was down 56% to $1.39 million on 564 screens over the weekend, but its total of $5.92 million is still strong.

Studio estimated have Ocean's Thirteen in third place with $21.3 million on 5,700 screens in 49 markets lifting its international total to $100 million. This includes a second place opening in France with $4.55 million on 755 screens while the film is still strong in the U.K., ($2.87 million on 481), and Germany, ($2.24 million on 775).

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End fell to fourth with $20.4 million on 10,538 screens in 104 markets for a total of $584.6 million. It is now 7th on that chart and 12th worldwide with $873.55 million. The battle for best-of-the-best continues with the U.K. reaching $76.04 million after a month including $1.94 million on 437 screens this weekend while Japan is catching up after earning $4.25 million on 757 screens for a total of with $67.59 million.
