Swan Song for El Cantante

August 1, 2007

El Cantante tries to get the jump on the competition by opening tonight. However, with a theater count of just 600, and a weak ad campaign to match, will its target audience even know it is in theaters?

Wednesday openings are risky affairs generally left to big budget films that can afford saturation-level advertising. Smaller films like El Cantante tend to suffer under this release strategy. Then again, given the film's theater count and its reviews, there's not much the studio can do to save the film from that fate.

Look for El Cantante to earn just over $1 million tonight, under $1 million tomorrow and $2 million over the weekend. However, that won't be enough to reach the top ten, while it will disappear as soon as theater owners are contractually allowed to.
