Busy Week can't Lift Home Market Numbers

May 6, 2006

There were eighth new releases to chart this week led by Aeon Flux; however, while the film topped the charts, its $6.08 million in rentals was hardly impressive. Fun with Dick and Jane remained in a close second place with $5.83 million over the week and $24.35 million after three weeks of release. Last week's winner was another story as Hostel plummeted 44% to $4.75 million for a two week total of $13.30 million. Next up was Match Point with $3.65 million, which is a reasonable start compared to its theatrical run and the same can be said for Tristan + Isolde and the $3.17 million it made.

The best of the rest was Shopgirl finishing in ninth place with $2.36 million while the only other theatrical release to chart was Casanoca in 25th with $970,000. That is a terrible start for that latter movie, even compared to its disappointing theatrical run. The other three new releases to chart this week were all direct-to-DVD release including Doctor Dolittle 3 in 16th with $1.50 million, Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children in 27th with $890,000, and The Detonator in 31st with $740,000.

Overall the total rentals for the week were down 4.2% to $136.3 million, which was 5.9% lower than the same weekend last year. The year-to-date rentals were about $10 million behind last year's pace before the start of the week, but despite 8 new releases 2006 fell further behind down 0.7% at $2.7 billion.

Over on the sales chart, there were even more new releases with 9 in the top 20 with Aeon Flux again leading the way. Second place went to Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children, which is a very high finish for a direct-to-DVD release. Hostel fell from first to third, just like it did on the rental charts while Tristan + Isolde opened in fourth. The final film in the top five was Narnia during its fourth week of release making it the oldest release in the top ten.

There were a bundle of new releases in places sixth through ninth led by Match Point and Casanoca. Doctor Dolittle 3 came in eighth with Shopgirl opening in ninth, just like in did on the rental charts. Two direct-to-DVD releases rounded out the top twenty with Karas - The Prophecy coming in 19th place and Killa Season coming in 20th.

There was only one new release on the TV on DVD charts, but that release was American Dad - Volume 1 and it finished in first place. Robot Chicken - Volume 1 remained in second place during its fifth week of release while Grey's Anatomy - Season 1 climbed into third during its 11th week of release. Mind of Mencia - Uncensored Season 1 dropped from first to fourth while South Park - The Complete Seventh Season rounded out the top five.
