Clear Sailing for Launch

July 15th, 2006

A near total lack of competition allowed Failure to Launch to remain in first place with $8.87 million over the week for a two-week total of $19.41 million. The best of this week's new releases was The Matador, which pulled in an incredible-for-a-limited-release total of $5.25 during its first week of release. Annapolis remained in third place down a mere 14% to $4.30 million for the week and $9.41 million after two. Eight Below slipped to fourth with $4.19 million and The Hills Have Eyes earned $3.70 million for fifth place.

The only other new release to chart this week was The Libertine in 12th place with $2.10 million. This is a better start than it got theatrically, but still well below its potential.

The overall rentals were down, but by just 1.5% to $155.1 million. That was still 1.1% more than the same weekend last year helping 2006 keep its 1.2% lead on 2005 with $4.2 billion.

Failure to Launch was also ableto remain in top spot on the sales chart this week, but there was a surprise DVD in second place. the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl shot into second place from 17th last week. This is the kind of bounce I would expect from a record-breaking film like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. This pushed Madea's Family Reunion into third place and Ultraviolet into fourth with The Matador rounding out the top five. With this last film, it seems likely that many people who saw the film in theatres liked it enough to pick it up, while most people who never got that chance decided to rent it first.

The Libertine was again the only other new release to chart this week placing 11th.

Over on the TV on DVD charts, we had a new number one for the first time in a month as Doctor Who - Season 1 claimed the crown. Entourage - Season 2 climbed into second place while Monk - Season Four remained in third. American Dad - Volume 1 shot back into the top five with a fourth place finish while the least probably result of the week was Dark Angel - Season 2, which claimed fifth place.

One last note, as previously stated, High School Musical was knocked out of the top spot, but did manage a ninth place finish.
