Big Man on the Home Market

July 29, 2006

There were not that many releases from this week's crop to chart, but it was a newcomer taking top spot as She's the Man lead both the rental and the sales chart this week. It earned $5.57 million after one week of rentals while the sales figures were not released as usual. This pushed Failure to Launch into second place with $4.53 million for the week and $29.71 million after nearly a month of release. The next newcomer was ATL with a third place, $2.75 million opening week. Basic Instinct 2 had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top five, and indeed the charts, down 33% to $2.61 million; however, its two-week total of $6.56 is still more than it earned theatrically. Rounding out the top five was The Matador with $2.53 million; with $11.38 million already, it too will have no problem topping its theatrical total on the home market.

Two direct-to-DVD releases were the only other newcomers to charts this week with Edison Force earning $1.87 million for 10th place and Road House 2 earning 31st place with $780,000.

The total rentals were able to recover somewhat for the week up 0.7% to $137.8 million; however, that was still 2.7% lower than the same weekend last year. Year to date 2006 is still ahead of 2005, but at $4.5 billion its lead has slipped to 0.9%.

As previously mentioned, She's the Man led the sales chart ahead of fellow newcomer ATL. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl earned a third place finish, again, while Failure to Launch fell to fourth. Lastly, Basic Instinct 2 fell from first to fifth as morbid curiosity started to wear out.

There were five other new releases to chart this week led by the TV on DVD release, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody - Taking Over the Tipton, in seventh place. Close behind was Edison Force in ninth. Next there was a clump of new releases starting with The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete Series in 17th, followed by Tsotsi in 18th, and finally Ren & Stimpy - The Lost Episodes in 19th.

Over on the TV on DVD charts, four of the top five and six of the top ten were newcomers, including the overall number one, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody - Taking Over the Tipton. One of the stars of that show, Ashley Tisdale, is also one of the stars of the second place DVD, High School Musical. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete Series earned third place while Ren & Stimpy - The Lost Episodes came in fourth. The final film in the top five was Carnivale - The Complete Second Season as the critically acclaimed show went out with a bang.

Just missing the top five was She-Ra - Princess of Power - The Best of while The Pretender - The Complete Fourth Season opened in eighth place.
