Sentinel Secures Top Spot on Home Market

September 9, 2006

A ton of new releases to chart this week led by The Sentinel with $8.34 million. That's a reasonable start compared to its theatrical total, but weak given its production budget. Poseidon fell to second place down 31% to $6.17 million for the week and a total of $15.26 million. Take the Lead took third place with $6.06 million, which is weak compared to its theatrical total, but reasonable given its production budget. R.V. held strong down just 17% to $5.74 million while its three-week total hit $21.90 million. Finally there was Inside Man, which fell a mere 11% to $4.69 million for a four-week total of $26.73 million.

As for the other new releases, they include the eighth place film, Friends With Money with $3.28 million over the week, which is a very impressive total for a limited release, most of which never even get a week's stay on the charts. Akeelah and the Bee managed 10th place with $2.70 million but while this is relatively better than its theatrical debut, it is still disappointing. Next up was the direct-to-DVD sequel, Brother Bear 2; the film managed 17th place with $1.41 million, but it performed much better on the sales chart. The final new release to chart was Stephen King's Desperation at 39th place with $490,000.

The rental marked ended the summer on a strong note taking in $157.7 million, which was up 9.7%, both from the week before and from the same week last year. Year-to-date total rentals now equal $5.3 billion, or 2.0% higher than last year's pace.

Leading the way on the sales chart was the surprising Brother Bear 2, but as usual, no figures were released. Second and third went to other new releases, The Sentinel and Take the Lead while the only holdover in the top five was Silent Hill in fourth. Rounding out the top five was Akeelah and the Bee just ahead of Friends With Money.

The rest of the new releases to chart this week were all from the TV on DVD category led by Arrested Development - The Complete Third Season in ninth place. Tenth place went to the hideously named, Desperate Housewives - The Complete Second Season - Extra Juicy Edition. Just a couple place back in 12th place was South Park - The Complete Eighth Season while Nip/Tuck - The Complete Third Season.

Those four releases were the only new released to chart this week as the also finished in the top four spots on the TV on DVD sales chart. This left just one holdover in the top five and it was House, M.D. - The Complete Second Season in fifth place.
