Slevin on a Lucky Streak

September 30, 2006

Despite there being two new releases in the top five, and four on the overall charts, Lucky Number Slevin remained in first place with $5.13 million for the week and $12.59 million after two. The first of the new releases was Stay Alive but its $3.40 million opening week rentals has been considered a disappointment, even compared to its less than spectacular theatrical run. The Wild held on better than most down 19% to $3.11 million for the week and $7.03 in total, but while its rentals have been weak, its sales have been strong. The same can be said for Stick It as it placed fourth on the rental charts with $3.02 million. Rounding out the top five was The Sentinel at $2.54 million for the week while it has brought in $19.09 million after four.

The only other new releases to chart were both limited releases led by The Proposition in 12th place with $1.62 million; this release should have no trouble topping its theatrical run by next week. On the other hand, Hard Candy has already accomplished that feat with its 16th place, $1.25 million debut.

There was a slight up-tick in the overall rental market as it reached $120.5 million. This is 0.6% higher than last week, but still 3.8% lower than the same week last year. This means 2006's lead over 2005 has shrunk to 1.6% with a running total of $5.7 billion, but this is still a good result and there's little reason to panic at the moment.

There was also a repeat winner on the sales chart with The Wild as the sales continue to mitigate the loses. Meanwhile, Stick It took second place as it also proved to be a much stronger seller than renting, however, unlike the previous film, this one should still show a profit eventually. Third place went to the direct-to-DVD release, Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses and in fourth place was Stay Alive. The final film in the top five was Lucky Number Slevin as it slipped from third to fifth.

There were no other first run releases to chart this week, but there were plenty of others to find a spot in the top twenty including Grease - Rockin' Rydell Edition in seventh, Gilmore Girls - The Complete Sixth Season in eighth, and Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.5 in 11th. Scooby-Doo in Pirates Ahoy! was a surprise entry on the charts coming in 14th place. The final new release, My Name Is Earl - The Complete First Season, secured 19th place.

Over on the TV on DVD charts, Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Second Season - Uncut remained in first place, and will likely stay on the charts for a long, long time. Gilmore Girls - The Complete Sixth Season debuted in second place while Lost - The Complete Second Season climbed into third. Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.5 started its run on the TV on DVD charts in fourth place just ahead of Smallville - The Complete Fifth Season.

The only other new release to chart this week was My Name Is Earl - The Complete First Season in seventh place.
