Weekend Theater Counts: Wallace and Gromit Doomed?

October 20th, 2005

Wallace & Gromit remains the widest US release this weekend, but it's set to lose some ground, shedding 184 theaters from last weekend. Still playing in 3,472 venues, however, means it is likely to have another good weekend. The big new release is Doom, which debuts in 3,044 locations. That's enough to give it a chance of a really big weekend gross, and it'll start out hot favorite for number 1 spot.

One other interesting release this weekend is North Country, which features a stellar cast and some excellent performances (most notably by Charlize Theron in the lead role). It's trying to achieve what Cinderella Man could not... box office success for a serious drama, and earlier Oscar momentum.
