No Small Fry

January 6, 2004

In an unusual turn of events, Big Fish saw its per theatre average jump this weekend to $20,356 in 125 theatres. This bodes very well for this Friday when it expands into more than 2000 theatres. Next weekend it may no longer be on top on the per theatre average chart, but should place well on the top five overall.

Monster saw an expansion in its theatre count going from 4 to 14. However, its per theatre average only dropped by about $5000 to $16,474. While not as impressive as Big Fish, Monster still should see some mainstream success.

The Fog of War also saw its per theatre average climb this week, albeit by a smaller amount. $13,571 was more than 16% higher than last weekend and put it on par with its opening weekend 3 weeks ago.

This past week also saw some milestones reached for several Per Theatre Charts alumnus:

The Triplets of Belleville, which is one of the favorites to take home an Oscar for best animated motion picture, passed the $1 million mark this weekend.
House of Sand and Fog saw a small increase in both theatre count and per theatre average and that helped it surpass $5 million this weekend.
And almost identical circumstances resulted in the film In American also crossing the $5 million mark.
