July 4th a Boost to Independent Films

A trio of films topped $10,000 over the 3 day weekend, and if you add in Monday's results, that numbers goes up to five. Topping the list was the overall box office champ, Spider-Man 2 with $21,232 per theatre average. Close behind was De-Lovely with an average of $18,310 in 16 theatres, while Before Sunset with $10,971 average in 20 theatres.

If Monday's numbers were taken into account those three films would have earned averages of $27,894, $25,000, and $15,559 respectively. And two more films, Fahrenheit 9/11 at $12,769 and The Clearing with $11,047, would be added to the list of $10,000 movies.

So all but one of the films to cross $10,000 this week were independent films. Although calling Fahrenheit 9/11 an independent film does stretch the definition slightly.
